Four Ways a Remote Job Can Help You Advance Your Career

Why a Remote Job Can Help Your Career

Many people still associate work-from-home jobs with low-level work. In today’s economy, however, nothing could be further from the truth.

A growing number of companies are embracing remote work as a way to reduce overhead while simultaneously providing skilled employees with a better work-life balance. Clearly, if employers are willing to allow top talent to work from home, telecommuting is an option worth exploring.

Here are four ways a remote job can help you advance your career.

  1. If you’re a college student, it’s a good way to gain experience and earn extra money.
Forget about waitressing or bartending till the early hours of the morning. If you need a part-time job with flexible hours that looks good on your resumé, look for a position as a customer service representative, online marketer or one of the many other remote jobs that offer good pay and even career development.

  2. If you’re responsible for someone’s care, you can remain in the workforce and keep earning money.
As Rachel Ritlop points out in her Forbes article titled “Millennial Parents, 5 Tips to Successfully Work Remotely Part-Time,” many young professionals experience stress when they have to choose between their children and their careers. Similarly, oftentimes people with sick or disabled family members can’t afford professional care and assume the role of caregiver themselves.

Some employers allow these employees to stay on in part- or full-time roles. But there are also numerous other remote jobs in graphic design, marketing, customer care, and more.

  3. You have access to more jobs.
Since you can do remote work from anywhere, you can apply for virtual jobs that you can’t find in your region. This is especially beneficial for people who live in rural areas, as well as professionals who aren’t located close to their industries’ geographic hubs.

  4. You can hone essential skills.
If you want to succeed as a remote worker, you need discipline. Working remotely forces you to develop outstanding time management and communication skills. In addition, if you interact with colleagues and customers from different regions or countries, you can greatly improve your people skills.

Getting a remote job can open up a whole new world of opportunities, so spend some time looking at the possibilities. And when you find the virtual job you want, remember to treat it like any onsite job and give it your best effort. Ultimately, it’s your performance that will bring you the career success you strive for!
